This year's holiday

when you kiss me on the midnight street
sweep me off my feet
singin' ain't this life so sweet

[David Gray]

Okay, enough quoting. Urgh, right now, in the Lizzie McGuire form I may say, I SO hate Ebonk. 'Uh. He promised us, convinced us like he was telemarketer of the year, that he would go with us to Batu Karas next Tuesday. Heck, he was the one suggesting it. But now he's about to bail. Ih ih ih. Sebell.

Susahnyaaaa mau liburan bersama teman-teman tercintaa..

Too good to be true

It only happens on my festive season a.k.a Genk’s birthdays, and it didn’t even happen on my last birthday. Rapat Genk combined with Telerabies (what’s with us and naming our groups?!).

Yesterday all six of us went on a road trip to Bandung. It started off with hours of traffic jam, but of course I didn’t mind, ‘cos we occupied ourselves well in Bangun’s Kijang.

A cup of coffee, a mini-documentary of The Manis (that’s our band, apparently) and thousands of laughter later, we arrived in Al-Mu’minun. It was already late in the afternoon, so we had to hurry to Ingga’s off-campus event, Espose.

The event was different from any other campus nights. Think JGTC in a smaller, more intimate scale, without the hot air of Jakarta and the crowd. Plus we got to sit down while enjoying the performers, and there was a Nescafe stand, selling a small cup of coffee for only Rp.1000.

There were Park Drive, 4 Peniti which we missed, and a few other acts. But I only managed to enjoy Sova, the supposedly main act yet they didn’t give a satisfying performance (and I’m not in the mood to review them now). I spent most of the time talking with the girls, listening to Bangun, Ebonk and Ari’s stupid comments on the stage, and catching up with Ingga and Kacank. I also managed to let some of my bitchiness out of its hibernation era, which felt really good.

We didn’t go straight back to Jakarta afterwards. We went karaoke-ing instead, the first time with Ari. It was only for an hour, but it was also the first time that the girls joined forces with Bangun-Ebonk in karaoke.

Finally the night had to end. I, the girls and Bangun had to go back home to Jakarta. The night certainly beats my 21st birthday party, and here’s the list of why it does:

1. Another QT with RunBunRos
2. Another QT with RunNgunBonk
3. Those two points happens in the same time.
4. A road trip with Genk, finally.
5. We got to meet Ingga.
6. No curfews for all of us this time, so we could come home at around 5 in the morning, which we did.
7. And of course, no good events go without good pictures of us.

Too good to be true? Maybe. But it did really happen, and I’m expecting more road trip like this.

No good events go without good pictures, and this is only one of them.

Choices

Do I really want to postpone my graduation for another working experience in Associated Press, this time being a paid intern for four whole months?

I've been offered an internship there, and I want it so bad. I wanna be a part of their team again, covering events here and there. One month wasn't enough for me to learn everything; all the shooting-editing-feeding process (uh, gonggo ya terdengarnya). However, due to some reasons, I can't take it next semester. Which means I'm gonna intern on January 2007. Which means my plan to graduate that month is ruined.

On the other hand, I can do my thesis next semester. By graduating with thesis, I can prove to at least myself that I am able to write my own research. I wanna feel the hype of composing it; they say you haven't been in college if you don't write a thesis and I somehow agree with that.

I'm torn.

Between you and me

Between you and me, I like to stalk people's profiles on Friendster. In my spare time, when I'm not busy playing Text Twist (or looking up decent, affordable uni abroad that has postgraduate programs majoring in journalism), I surf through my friends list, which leads me to my friends' friends list, and so on.

Now I'm doing it (since I've given up looking for journalism school in Malaysia). And between you and me, I don't like how a close friend of mine is casually-yet-constantly dating this girl. I tried to be okay with it (yknow, as long as he's happy), but sometimes, specially when I just saw their Friendster profiles, I can't. Ooh, that I-don't-know-you-yet-I-don't-like-you-already attack is coming. Not like I'm jealous, it's just that he goes on SO much better with his ex, which is one of my besties.

They made such a great couple, I empathized too much when they broke up. Here's what my childish, selfish mind has to say about this:

Can't you two just get back together nooow? I know it's none of my business, and I should just support whatever it is my best friends decide, but you are made for each other!! I mean, surely this guy doesn't have a psycho ex-girlfriend who seems to be ready to kill my best friend anytime. And you, guy, is this new girl funny? Does she behave in such an angelic way, her bright mood is so infectious?

Between you and me, I think I'm obsessing this way too much.

Quit guilt

How do you quit a job? How do you say it to your boss who just lost her beloved mother recently, in need of a few teachers to fill in for upcoming new classes and is taking a break from all of it (and suspectedly is also having a nervous breakdown from these things)?

The thing is, I think I have to quit my teaching job. I wanna concentrate on thesis/internship starting August, so it means I still have time until about June/July-ish to break this news to my boss. But then, I'm planning to have (a). A TOEFL course (b). A Spanish course (c). A Photoshop course (d). A holiday with my friends PLUS another one with Bangun (this whole double, sok kaya holidays was his idea--he thought we needed another honeymoon, since Bali last year was so special for us) in July.

Two out of four points above is enough to take up my teaching time (I know I won't get to do all four). That's why I may have to quit on July. Which means June will be my last month. Which means I have to resign at least this May.

I just don't have the heart to do it. It looks like Chrysolit is kinda short on teachers now, and will it even be ethical to resign? Also, I hate to admit it but those satanic children have grown on me. Somehow, through those demonic behaviors, they've made their rocky way to my heart and built a camp there. I missed them when I took my one-month-off, how can I live without them?! Plus if I quit, I can't see Rosa, seriously the cutest girl on earth, anymore. And I know this sounds so...teacher-y, it's just that I want to see them with improved skills, I want to see that they've actually gained something from my classes.

God I feel noble.

I bet if boredom or laziness was my reason, I would have more guts (and less morale) to do it.

Current state

Two thirty a.m. Alone in my room, with nothing but the sound of my fingers clicking the keyboard. A backup CD is inside the drive, with old pictures and written files in it. 2004, 2003, 2002. They're all there; The girls, the boys, friends who are still in touch, friends who are occasionally still in touch, friends who are lost, short-term friends, short-term friends who are lost.

Ah, cut the craplah. My point is, lagi-lagi, nostalgia memang suka bikin gilaaa yaaaaaa..Apalagi kalo malem-malem sendirian. Waw. I feel like smiling alone with a slight pang inside (haha norak) when looking at these pictures. It's like they tell my story from time to time. Ada jamannya ini, jamannya itu. I can imagine how I was feeling when I took some particular pictures. And it's quite funny (and sad) looking at those pictures thinking how some of us have somehow grown awfully apart from each other now. I'm not saying this current state sucks and I'm stuck in the past. I'm not. It's just that no matter what, sometimes it feels nice to have a look back through the pictures.

Reminiscing is good, when you have someone to share it with. Hmm. I'm blabbing aren't I.

p.s : Rongky, above all, photo session kita yang banyaknya melebihi portfolio supermodel kelas kakap itu amat sangat hilarious kalo diliat-liat lagi. I'd put up one here, but then it also means I'm showing my stupidity to the world. Itu loh, foto kita mati.

One that I adore, you'll always be my whore

Andy F. Noya stated something very interesting for me in last week's installment of his talkshow in Metro TV, Kick Andy, that went something like this:

Menurut beberapa pendapat, perkawinan dimana sang istri menjadi ibu rumah tangga dan hanya suaminya yang bekerja dapat digolongkan sebagai sebuah pelacuran.

Ladies, it's time to start composing your resume.

The one and the other one

First thing first; I passed my job training's presentation! To put the cherry on top, one of the judges said I had a plus point for working in APTN. Finally, all my work and all those feelings of queasiness, nervous, and anxiety for the last month paid off today. I'm telling you, there's nothing like the feeling when you get when your teacher tells you "Anda lulus," even though it's only for the job training.

Not like it's the grand finale though. I still have to revise my report and hand them in a week, then I have to think whether I should do a thesis or internship for my graduation. More on that later. In the meantime, I've passed one of my two dreading sidang.

That's not the only highlight of this week. Two days ago I went to Bandung for the second weekend in a row--last week I'd spent my anniversary with Bangun there. ANNIVERSARY. Big stuff for me. This time, however, I went there with Bangun and Runi to watch Kings of Convenience.

We arrived at Bandung at around 3.30 pm, then met up with Ingga in Ciwalk before checking in the hotel (Bukit Dago--highly recommended if you're looking for a cheap yet comfortable room. At 120k, you get a bed for two, super cold AC, TV, and hot water).

The event was actually called Dunhill Soundshine, taking place in Dago Tea House, a convention center located in, well, Dago. It was supposed to start at 5 pm, with Pure Saturday and Cherry Bombshell as the first two acts. We went there at around 6, thinking we would be just in time to watch a bit of the two bands before the main act. But surprise, surprise, when we got there, none of the bands had started yet.

There was enough time to consider whether to eat or to wait (it takes a long time for us to consider something, apalagi kalo gak ada Ebonk si decision maker), then to finally eat something before Cherry Bombshell, the first band, started.

The event was not good, overall. I think the coordination was bad. Foods, drinks, cameras and cellphone activation were prohibited. Last time I checked, it was a music concert, not a classroom. The venue was too small for 1000 people sitting down. The committee made an effort to make the audience stand up, but it didn't work. Ya iyalah, udah enak-enak duduk, disuruh berdiri dengan musik macam Pure Saturday yang menurut gue nggak sebanding untuk ditonton capek-capek. The lighting was also awful. There was a time when Cherry Bombshell was up, the vocalist sang while walking around the front area of the stage. But the spot light was still on the center of the stage, not moving an inch. Bagaikan menonton band tanpa vokalislah jadinya.

Thankfully, those two Norwegian guys were good enough to cover the bruises. Even though they perform in an acoustic show, they were able to liven up the show. Aside from their remarkable guitar duo, Erlend Oye and Eirik Glambek Boe delivered an animated performance. They entertained the audience--dengan kata lain, mereka suka ngelawak di atas panggung. Well, maybe you ought to do that if you play an acoustic music people can hardly dance to.

After around two hours, I became more hooked on the band, specially the oh-so-gonggo Erlend. His highlight of the night was when he fake-played trombone with his voice during their cover of Girl From Ipanema. The crowd finally stood up just before I'd Rather Dance With You, and not to dance. Nggak tau apa gue nggak liat karena di belakang, tapi penonton di Bandung kemaren nggak bisa dibilang antusias. They didn't go that wild even when that upbeat, commercial tune was played.

I, Bangun, Runi and Ingga didn't go straight home. We hung around the venue, before deciding to team up with Oho and Co. and drove to C'Mar (pronounced Ceu' Mar), one of the best streetside place to eat when you're in Bandung. It's not even a stall, it's purely, literally a streetside place where you eat on plastic chairs spread on the side of the street.

What a wise decision it was to eat there, because after we were done, in walked Mr. Oye himself, accompanied by two bodyguards (one of them being the judge of Indosiar's Gelar Adu Panco or something, so said Ingga). Needless to say, we dorks were star-struck. After a few minutes in the rain thinking whether we should go up to him or not, we did approach the lanky guy and asked for a picture. And voila, we got one!!

After only managing to form the words "Nice show, man!" from my mouth and got a "Thanks!" from Erlend, I and Runi walked back to the car dumbfoundedly, grinning ear to ear. The night ended up very nicely. I had fun with my friends in Bandung, plus I also got to have more fun afterwards with Bangun.

And Mr. Oye (plus Mr. Other One--it's a shame his name is less mentioned), you rock.

Rapat genk

I had a great time with the girls yesterday. We had our biweekly Rapat Genk. Notice the word, biweekly. Last time, we had to wait two months before the next gathering, so meeting them last night after just two weeks was definitely comforting.

We didn't do anything significant; we just went to PIM and tried the new place, The Cafe Cartel. The place was good, foods were a bit pricey but the atmosphere was worth it. Sofas, smoking area, not-too-loud music, and a city-lights-themed wallpaper which looked nice. Plus they give away free breads for the customers.

Then the real Rapat Genk began. We started talking non-stop about everything, filling up stories for each other over buttered breads, pizza, a snack platter, and of course glasses of iced coffee. Long after that, Arif came to join, and longer after that, we finally decided to go. I guess none of us wanted to go home, so we just walked around the almost empty mall (as it was over 10 p.m). Embarassing moment of the day was when we acted mbak-mbak-ish by taking pictures in the bridge that connected the two PIMs, with the traffic below as our background. Pretty.

Above all, it was soooo nice and comforting, just as always whenever we're together. Nothing beats those meaningless talks (bergunjing + berkhayal + cerita nggak penting dari kehidupan sehari-hari) and jokes (pistol emas, Run?). We had planned to catch a movie or have a karaoke session, but turned out, coffee was enough. I still want the karaoke session, but I'll save it for another time.

Girls, let's do this more often, okay? No more two-month-absent, please. Mari kita lakukan agenda kita kemaren yang isinya karaoke, belanja, pesta kebun, sama ke Anyer. Let's get high on caffeine again!!

Confessions of a (dramatic) music nun

I've always been against music piracy. I despise those people who rips off an entire album into a CD, put it in some lousy-printed case and sells it for what, 15-20 thousand a piece? Whereas the real artist could've gotten all the royalties from it. Well you know how it works so I won't blab about it here.

Even so, I download songs (this is the confession part). I download songs and then compile them into a CD. I've been doing that ever since I knew the one evil privilege to the communication world that is the Internet. In my defense, mostly I download songs that I know aren't going to make it over here, my oh-so beloved country of Indonesia. And I NEVER make a penny out of it. I give them to my friends, on birthdays or just to save them from the music they got from radio and MTV. Also, I've never ripped the whole album from one artist. If I like, say, more than five songs, I'd rather buy the CD than downloading the whole album.

Imagine my guilt when I found Feist's Let It Die album very interesting, and I happen to have it in my computer. Do I really have to go and buy the original, when the whole thing is already here practically, and all I have to do is use my Nero?

...

....Aaaand burn. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry Feist! Semoga Anda tetap kaya raya!

The price is (not so) right

These days, to most--if not all--people, money is everything. At first I agree with that. Call me materialistic, but really, who are we kidding? I need money for everything. Even that shit about love-is-more-important-than-money. As someone said to me one day, "mau makan cinta?"

Anyway, someone recently told me his story. Mainline is, he's upset with his girlfriend because on one occasion, she plans to give him something he wants that's expensive. He feels insulted by her intention, saying when he can't afford something, it doesn't mean that he expects someone to feel sorry and buy it for him. Doesn't work that way with him.

While all the girl wants is to surprise her boy, thinking that he'll be happy because that's all that matters to her; to make him happy. What an unusual misunderstanding.

Money vs. Gesture
I respect the guy with all my heart, really. I mean, with all his principle and how he stands up for it. I don't know if it's purely ego and pride, or if it's one of the values his parents taught him, but it's a rare thing I think, to have that way of thinking

However, I have to agree with the girl in this case. She only thinks of it as a gesture. The price could be 200k, but it could also be 20k or even 5k, she doesn't care. All she wants is to give it to him, without any intention of feeling superior, nor pity to the guy. It's purely a gift, which happens to be a little expensive for him.

Dan bukannya si cewek juga tipe orang kaya raya. Bapaknya bukan wakil direktur perusahaan minyak nomer satu di Indonesia, bukan juga bos sebuah perusahaan asing dengan gaji dolar. She struggles to manage her finance, she earns some of her own allowance, and when she thinks she's got enough extra cash, she'd spend some of it for her dear boyfriend on this special annual occasion.

So who wins?
I'm not blaming anyone here. The girl should learn that not everything can be counted as a gift to everyone. Mungkin juga selama ini si cewek mikir, untuk beberapa hal, harga itu gak begitu penting. Kalo memang dia suka, gak peduli orang bilang overpriced, ya bakal dia beli. The guy, on the other side, should start to think that not everything is about the money.

What I'm trying to say in this entry is, cobalah jangan melulu liat harganya, liat niatnya. With that attitude, he can be addressed as ungrateful by some people. Udah dikasih barang mahal-mahal kok protes. Fortunately it's his girlfriend, who knows a thing or two about his overwhelming pride. Funny how it's different from most cases. Biasanya orang bilang begitu kalo menyayangkan harga rendah dari suatu barang yang didapet. Ini protes karena harganya ketinggian! Either way, still, it's not always about the money, is it?

As for me, I'm glad I've learned another unique trait from people. We as humanbeing surely are difficult to handle with, aren't we.

Why stop at seven?

I got this off Runi's blog. She said I should fill this out, so here I am Run, filling this out!

Seven things that scare me:
1. Heights.
2. Losing my VIP.
3. Ocean.
4. Having to live on my own.
5. Growing up.
6. Having children and my own family to manage.
7. Lately, it's the future again.

Seven random facts about me:
1. I have to get what I want, no matter how.
2. I sleep with a lot of stuffed animals.
3. My safety pillow has a name.
4. I don't like people easily. In fact, I can hate them without any reasons.
5. I can't live without my car.
6. I don't think I'll survive living in a city less crowded, less...metropolitan than Jakarta. I need all the buzz, the riots and the hype of it around me.
7. I don't like kids, yet I teach them and get a good cash out of it.

Seven things I hope to do before I die:
1. Be a successful journalist, or better yet, have my own international magazine.
2. Publish at least a book.
3. Settle down happily with my own family living in my own house, with a shiny BMW parked outside, bought by my own money.
4. Try to live in London or NYC.
5. Go on a super romantic trip to a tropical island for my honeymoon.
6. Spoil my mom.
7. Get more religious.

Seven things I can do:
1. Argue. I like arguing.
2. Blow things out of proportion, and then whine a lot about it.
3. Remember insignificant dates with my calendar-brain partner, Runi.
4. I can write some.
5. Fix the toilet when it's broken, even when I'm drunk. Hahaha.
6. Drive.
7. Leyeh-leyeh all day long and not getting bored of it.

Seven people who should fill this out:
I don't know, seriously. I don't care who should fill this out.

March, 13th.

Sidang KP tanggal 13 Maret.

Tigabelas Maret!!! Can it hold like for a day or something? Of all days this semester, they had to choose that day. I'm supposed to be having fun somewhere else, not standing up in front of the intimidating judge team, giving presentation about what I did (well, or lack thereof) in APTN last month.

Iya gak Oom?

I've been nervous about this ever since yesterday. To think that I have to make the 50-page-long report, with all its terms and conditions, prepare for the dreadful presentation, it all seems so...udah-mau-lulus. Not fun. And yes, there's still gonna be thesis (berikut pra-sidang dan sidangnya) next semester. How am I supposed to do all that?!

Anyway, come to think of it, 13 Maret itu sebentar lagi yah? Man, it's fast.

Desperately wanted:

  1. I miss driving my car, even down that long, boring Bintaro-Karawaci route.
  2. I miss hanging out with the girls.
  3. I miss roaming the mall with Runi and our routine of sok kaya raya, trying on super expensive clothes and then taking pictures of us, then top the day over a cup of coffee.
  4. I miss sleeping late, watching any crappy shows on TV and/or babbling unimportant things on the phone.
  5. I miss waking up after the sun. Sungguh nggak sopan sebenernya kalo kita bangun mendahului matahari, menurut gua.
  6. I miss wanting to strangle my Chrysolit students, at the same time can't help adoring Rosa.
  7. I miss going shopping with Mom and Dinda.
  8. I miss my PC at home.
  9. I miss going somewhere with Bangun almost every afternoon like we do on holidays (well, his holidays actually--mumpung dia di Jakarta).

The last point has even caused a scene two nights ago. Biasalah, udah lama nggak bikin aksi. But seriously, I hate the timing right now. Either that, or I've been having the worst PMS ever; so bad, I've turned dramatic. I hate hate hate it when things aren't going my way.

If it means nothing to ya

Why'd you sing with me at all?

Exaggerated intimacy

Two days ago, I planned on catching a movie in PIM with Bangun but he had no ride. On the other hand, my car was parked at home and has been rarely used ever since I started interning. So we agreed to have him coming over to my house to get the car before going to PIM to meet me. He said jokingly, "ih aku merasa kita udah deket banget deh." I said seriously, "ih aku berasa kaya deh." (karena sebelumnya gue bilang dengan nada sangat belagu, "tuh ambil aja mobil di rumah kalo nggak ada.")

There he went to my house, dropped by his mom. Since she didn't know the way out to the main street, she waited for him to pre-heat the car, quietly, which was unlike her. Afterwards, he took my car to Hilman's 'cause we weren't supposed to meet for another three hours. He told me, Hilman was quite fussy seeing him with my car. That lanky guy said, as reported by Bangun, "Bawa mobil istri, ya."

Eek.

Is it really a gesture for showing one couple's...intimacy?! I mean, to me it's just another little thing. We wanted to meet, he didn't have a car available in his house, I got my red thing waiting to be driven (masa dalam waktu sebulan cuma isi bensin dua kali saking nganggurnya..). It's a mutual situation, right?

Hilman's just exaggerating.

New year, new bunch

Here's the ending of my New-Year's-Eve-fiasco: I and Bangun decided to spend it in Bandung. We took off on Friday night, and had a small party on the 31st. Booze and co., check. Noisy, tuneless trumpets, check. Documentation, check. Guitars, check. Silly, off-key-singing, drunken friends, check.

Besties, nada.

Bune and Rozelle couldn't come with me and Runi, and as the night fell, I felt sad. Dangdutnya, semakin malam larut semakin terasa ketidakhadiran mereka. Haha. Finally the moment came; new year's eve without them. It was sad, sad, sad, even though at twelve, Bune called Runi and Rozelle called me, so we were indirectly chatting together. I was torn between laughing, feeling stupid and crying.

Anyway, on to the party. It was actually great. My first new year's eve with Bangun after we're officially together. Hehe padahal setiap taun dari jamannya lulus SMA juga barengan terus. Ebonk, Meivi, Ikhsan and Adit were also a fun company. We stayed up 'til morning, drinking and singing. Though I gotta admit, this was not the best new year's party.

So that's it, 2005. It was a good year for me with Bangun (the whole saga), Bali trip, APTN and my semester's 3.12 being the highlights. Cheers 2006, may you rock even more!

Secara

I was reading this stranger's blog I'd found earlier (from a long, long browse through links from various blogs). From what I read, this girl's writings were good. She also made a few poems, did some reviews, and she seemed to have many ideas in her head. I aasumed, from her daily activities, that she was also a writer. I mean, a professional one. In short, I kinda adored this stranger; I even almost left a comment there. But then, I found one single thing that really, really changed my mind.

She uses the word "secara".

Then there's this guy from high school whom I'm not really acquainted with. Somehow, for some inexplicable reasons, I don't really like him. I think he's too loud for a guy. Menurut gue, si oknum A ini suka terlalu heboh kalo ketemu orang. Therefore, everytime I meet him I only bother to give him a "hi-and-bye". Plus he's a pretty good friend of Bangun, jadi kan out of morality, I have to hold back my hurl and keep my eyes...friendly everytime I meet him.

Anyway, one night, we were stuck hanging out together (after some certain high-school-event which is also an unofficial reunion every year). I was okay 'cos well, I got my other friends. I didn't have to listen to his loud, gaul blabbers. Then to top it all, he said to Bangun (and I remember the words precisely), "...secara lo kuliah di Bandung.."

Right then and there, he had made his way to my least random favorite people (remember I tend to judge and not like people randomly?).

I've never liked all those bahasa gaul since the very beginning. And I consider myself lucky to be in a peer where no one uses those words. Well, we actually do, A LOT, for fun. Which is better. (And to my defense, Oom, it's okay to use the word "bo'" once in a while, sebagai jembatan komunikasi diantara teman!)

But of all those nasty words, one I hate with all my bones (and fats) inside me is that "secara" word. Why, people, why? Kenapa menggunakan kata yang bahkan gak pernah relevan dengan kata selanjutnya dalam setiap pemakaiannya itu? (Maksudnya disini, dalam konteks sebagai "bahasa gaul" itu ya). It just sounds so awful. I heard the word for the first time a long time ago in one of the most popular youth radio stations in Jakarta, and has been living with that word polluting my ears ever since.

Of course, we still can see from a positive point of view: the language is a form of creativity. Sangat kreatif orang yang pertama kali menciptakan dan menyebarluaskan kata-kata "gaul". I am not a big fan of Bahasa Indonesia (belagu memang, tapi kadang-kadang lebih enak--apalagi kalo menyangkut mengutarakan perasaan--ngomong dan nulis pake Bahasa Inggris), but still, I don't want my language to be ruined by some tacky words!

In the words of Arif Kamra: "Udah 60 taun kita merdeka, mau jadi apa bangsa kita ini?!"
