A US Airways Airbus 320 carrying more than 150 people on board landed on the Hudson River after flocks of birds collided into one of their engines, New York Times reported.
The incident claimed no deaths. The passengers and crew, NYT reported, were saved by police boats and helicopters, as well as tourists' ferries.
The pilot reportedly walked twice around the cabin to make sure no one was left inside before he joined hundreds other standing shoulder-to-shoulder on the plane's wings, waiting for rescue.
NYT wrote "A Quick Rescue Kept Death Toll at Zero" as one of its headlines.
Shivers are still running down my spine. There might be something more when in a few weeks' time the plane recorder is out and investigated, but regardless of what caused the mishap, this is what rescue effort should be everywhere in the world.
And of course, kudos to the pilot for "ditching" the plane smoothly on a freezing midtown river. If it happens here, we'll surely be looking at numbers of bodies recovered from the river bed, as well as families waiting anxiously in the airport for at least the names of the passengers on board.

This is why you should just donate, people.
Putri Prameshwari
Despite the highly-publicized fuss about Indonesian groups planning to send Islamic jihad warriors to the aid of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, several travel agents in Jakarta said Friday no one had so far booked flights to the area.
Dina, a ticketing agent with KIA Tours and Travel, said Friday that no one had booked a flight to Amman in Jordan, Cairo in Egypt, or to Lebanon's Beirut. The three cities are the closest entry point to Gaza.
"We haven't received any reservations to Middle Eastern countries for the last few weeks," said Yuni, a ticketing agent at another key travel agency, Vayatour.
Flights to Amman is served by several major airlines. A round-trip ticket linking Jakarta and Amman by Qatar Air is sold around US$1,060, while a slightly higher price is offered by Etihad Airways, at US$1,090.
The most expensive ticket is offered by Emirates, where a jihad warrior must pay US$1,450 for a round trip.
"But with Emirates, you can change your flight schedule without any surcharge," said Dina.
Tickets from Jakarta to Cairo by Qatar Air carry a price tag of US$1,129, while flying with Etihad Airways will set one back by US$1,045 and by Emirates, US$2775.
Meanwhile, passengers from Jakarta to Beirut have to pay US$1,057 to fly with Etihad Airways, US$1,412 with Qatar Air, and US$1,620 with Emirates.

Don't you just hate it when
Your editor tells you at 6 p.m that your story's too old for tomorrow's paper, and you have to find another one. After struggling for ideas, you find one, but of course you have to confirm it with your source.
So you make a quick phone call, and start writing when at that moment, you should have been at the gym because there's a jazz class you've always wanted to join and you've been thinking about it the whole day. Either that, or watching Friends while jogging on the treadmill.
Ninety minutes later, you're done with the story. You wait and wait for the editor to edit it, when he suddenly approach your desk and say,
"Putri, i'm afraid there's no space for your story anyway, so we're putting it up for tomorrow. You're done for the day, aren't you? Just go home."

I've already learned enough to know
Despite my little firecracker incident (I'm done with holding any of them in my hand), I had one of the best New Year's Eve celebrations. With Bangun's family.
I've always been a NYE enthusiast - every year, Dec. 31 has to be merry, however I celebrate it. My VIPs had to be there, I don't wanna know how.
But this year, I couldn't care less. Maybe I'm too preoccupied with the new house; I've moved to an area five minutes away from Pisok, and it's been hell - couches, TVs, and cupboards are in the places they're not supposed to be.
So anyway. I and Bangun didn't have any plans until late in the afternoon, when his brother said the family was going to have a barbecue at home.
A few hours later, we were packed in the den, grilling ribs, lamb chops, prawns, sausages, while drinking white wine and eating mashed potatoes. Bangun's parents, Obeng and his fiancee, us, and Iluk.
It felt nice. Haha. Who could've thought.
At twelve, we went outside to light up the firecrackers with the neighbors' kids, and this is where my hand got burned and my brand-new satin top got accessorized by two small holes.
Not to forget the laughs from the crowd.
All in all, it was another great celebration, despite a little change from the previous years. For what it's worth, I wish everyone a jolly good 2009 with the best of times following 365-day-round.
As for me, I'm done with wishing.
