Journalists across Indonesia staged rallies earlier today after an SCTV cameraman was beaten by Bank Indonesia's security guys yesterday.
While I salute their solidarity, let me have my piece of mind on this.
The incident began when Mr. Cameraman refused to leave his ID card on BI's front desk upon entering the building. He claimed that his press ID should guarantee enough that he was there to cover an event, to look for news.
Here's news for him: Journalists aren't Gods. We are not, and should never be, immune to every rule in this world.
It's a standard procedure in almost every building in Jakarta nowadays that visitors must leave their ID card in the front desk and carry a visitor's ID to get around.
And it takes what, two, three minutes to do that?
It doesn't leave any harm for our lives if we just do that simple thing. True, Mr. Cameraman was just doing his job, and the most important thing for him was to get comments from our VP candidate, Boediono.
But hey, the world does not revolve around you, big guy. Those security officers were also doing their job by following the procedure. By not taking a risk of having someone infiltrating into the country's central bank.
Cover. Both. Sides. Take a perspective.
However, I wanna blame those bouncers too. They cannot just go around hitting strangers now, can they. I believe the problem was between Mr. Cameraman and one guy, but in the end, ten guys just pounced on the poor fella.
This time, I don't salute solidarity.
Come on people, use your brain and not your muscle. In the end, I always believe the trophy belongs to the cooler guys. Brawling just seems so.... uneducated to me.
